To prevent frying some items make sure it is a voltage converter, not just an adapter. Adapters only change the physical connection but not the voltage. Many small appliances (e.g. chargers) will allow voltages form 100-240v, if so you only need an adapter. Make sure the wattage rating of the converter is adequate for the appliance. A flat iron take lots of power so you would need a large one, too big to be lugging around, borrow an iron from the hotel.

Make sure it is an transformer or inverter converter. The cheap ones (diode or resistive) will often fry things.
