Your profile says you are an AA Platinum. If so, you are actually losing money by buying the upgrades. You can get upgraded easily (if they are offering upgrades to non-elite members) with just buying 2 stickers for ORD-EWR = $60 ($30 each). So you paid an extra $30.

$90 is very cheap for a non-elite to upgrade, and I have done that a couple times myself before I became an elite.
