Award tickets are inherently changeable. Changing the routing comes with a refare that is true which is what the OP experienced. A day change however does not require a re-issue and hence should be exempt from these games by all means.

in some cases LH will try it to get some extra money.
Had some experience by changing date of a last Segment Germany-LHR- Ticket bought in Nov. last year.
First date change done by phone(fully flex C- booking class)- Before rebooking the LH agent said I ave to pay about 12 Euro more fuel surcharge which will be deducted from my LH CC-This was never done.
Then I had to reschedule this flight again 8 weeks ago-this time I went to a LH ticketing counter after arriving from a trip- They wanted to collect this surcharge on the spot- I refused to pay directly and asked for debiting my CC used for the booking- I am still waiting for the collection
