Part of my rationale is that I primarily shoot wildlife and action. I'm not going to ever find myself in the position of fiddling with in-camera size and quality settings while a shot gets away. I lose enough of them without the added help.

There is a place in the workflow for image size and quality adjustments. That place should not be in the camera.

Edit to add: One thing I learned on my last trip is that photographers for National Geographic are not allowed to throw any of their images away. They all go to the editor. . .
I leave it on max resolution and RAW format when available as well. As I talked about this above, I feel older 5MP cameras with large sensors are better in many ways as compared to higher resolution but cheaper cameras with small sensors.

I only use lower resolution for those jobs I mentioned. These are mostly stationary objects and I use specific cameras set at lower resolution.
