Look at a similar market, dominated by two OW carriers - BA and AY:

Both sell each others flights.
Both quote different fares for the same flight.
AY allows you a stop on the way at ARN.
AY tickets allow you to use BA for cheap onward flights from HEL
BA tickets allow you to use AY for cheap onward flights from LHR

If the same were to be repeated on LHR-JFK, we would see:

BA and AA offering greater frequencies, codesharing on each other
Compare BA and AA for cheapest tickets
Using TP earning 1-stop flights LHR-BOS-JFK(LGA).
Cheap AA fares LHR-JFK-Caribbean/Hawaii/Central America, using BA to JFK
Cheap BA fares JFK-LHR-Europe, using AA for those that prefer.
Cheap AA fares JFK-LHR-Europe, using all BA flights, allowing to get a JFK trip and a Europe trip out of the same ticket.
