I booked a stay in the Four Points Pudong in Shanghai for 1/July. During check-in the front desk staff tried to highlight something to me but I did not pay attention and her English was only 'so-so'.
Check-in proceeded (takes longer these days for non-Chinese due to new Police requirements during the Olympics) when a second front desk staff approached me.

She explained that during July and August I would be eligible for a free upgrade from the Four Points to the new Sheraton Pudong (next door/same complex)!

When I checked my private inbox I found the below individual email I received earlier as well

Greetings from Four Points by Sheraton & Sheraton Complex hotel
Shanghai, pudong!

Kindly be informed that you have been freely upgraded to our Sheraton
building during July.1st-July.2nd,2008(1night),the confirmation
number is xxxxxxxxxxxx. As our valued Gold Guest, we would like to
express our appreciation of your loyalty to Starwood Hotels. This
courtesy offer will be extended until Aug. 31. 2008 and it is our
great honor to invite you to experience our Sheraton hotel &
residences this summer.

In the event that you still wish to stay with our Four Points by
Sheraton, please feel free to contact us and we will maintain your
current reservation.

In addition, if you are travelling with a non-SPG member, they are
very welcome to stay with us in the Sheraton also. This will only be
charged at an additional RMB300++ per room based on the original rate
of the Four Points reservation.

IMHO this indcates that -at least- all SPG Gold/Plat members will receive this free upgrade. However, maybe even all 'SPG' members as they explicitly mention the upgrade fee for 'non-SPG' members?

It might also be worthwile to some of you that both hotels are currently the only Mainland China hotels in the 'Starpicks' list (4P = 600 CNY++, Sheraton = 900 CNY++).

I actually decided to stay in the 4P for that day. Room was nice/clean/totally OK for a biz stay.

As I have another stay booked for the 4P I will test the Sheraton as well. Keep you posted.
