I always take advantage of online check-in from US to overseas destinations, but bps are still issued by airport agents.
I suspect even with international OLCI, some airports still require the airport to issue actual boarding documents.
You're checked in online, but are not allowed to print any documents that you'd need to get through security and immigration. Those are local government laws, not United rules.
