I'll fess up on this one.
I probably do have a couple of hundred bucks in my wallet. And if it's really $2.00, I'll pay cash. But it never is - it's $2.00 plus tax, so $2.17. And I hate, hate, hate travelling with loose change in my pocket. So I'll charge it.
Let me make that my pet peeve - aiport shops that don't price things to round to the nearest dollar (or even the nearest quarter) after tax is included.
And airport shops that make me sign a credit slip for a $2.17 purchase, thereby annoying the FT'er in line behind me. If a card swipe and a thank you are good enough for a cup of coffee at Starbucks, why isn't it good enough for a bag of cashews at the newsstand?
