I seem only to be able to find booking classes like U or H, no Y or B. I would like to try and get upgrades and take advantage of any opportunities for additional EQM's whenever possible. What are some of the different ways to get the best seats?

Also, is there any reference material for all the acronyms used on here?
First, welcome to FT!

As for acronyms used, check the glossary sticky at the top of the board.

When you are searching in united.com (we call it .bomb because it has so many issues...see you learned your first acronym!) there is an advanced option you need to look for in a drop down box where you can choose how you would like to upgrade, using miles for a Y or B fare (8,000 miles each way domestic) or miles for a H or M fare (15,000 miles each way domestic). 25,000 mile economy awards cannot be upgraded ahead of time, except for GS members (look up that acronym ) mileage tickets can only be upgraded via a buyup at check in. These buyups are not always offered.
