What do airlines do to the frequent flyer miles when the account holder passes away?

A co-worker's relative recently passed away. There are at least 380,000 miles remaining in his account.(with one of the top 3 U.S. airlines) Will his wife/children be able to inherit the miles?

Will AwardGuard protect those miles in this kind of situation?
