I disagree. Given that the OP is not going to be flying a huge amount on any one airline, the generic *G benefits (lounges, priority check-in, extra baggage allowances) still make life significantly easier. Plus you'll be able to use the fabulous NZ lounge at MEL

Don't forget TG also flies out of MEL with good connections via BKK to Europe and the rest of Asia. They are actually pretty good in economy...
