Forget enrolling to NZ and stick with UA if you fly over 50K a year. I've been doing this for 3 years! NZ's program is not good for economy fliers.
DO FLY NZ between AU and US though, fly NZ (and SQ, AC...) and put your miles in UA's Mileage Plus.
