I'm also new to Marriott gold (by virtue of BA ) and tested it out last week. I did get an upgrade on both occasions, and access to the 'concierge lounge' which did mean free breakfast basically. In Victoria (BC, Canada) I had to remind the check-in agent about the lounge access though, as she hadn't enabled that on my room key
