"W" class is the cheapest class of ticket which may be upgraded. Although it depends on sales, London is usually the cheapest European destination.

UA's trans-Atlantic fares right now are much more expensive than Northwest's and perhaps some others. You might want to hold off buying a ticket until they uncork another sale.
