i.e. the tonnage of gas used from AKL-LAX on a 747 carrying 300 pax and same amount of cargo is a LOT more than the 777 with same load. Others here I am sure will have more input on this one.

True, but travelling almost 7000 miles over all ocean with only 2 engines is a bit challenging!
