You seem to be forgetting that most UA 777 aircraft, especially those used for transpacific routes, do not have Y+ or C+ yet (they were supposed to get started on reconfiguring them in late-2002 but now, they may not for a long time).

Anyway, the general consensus on FT seems to be that the B744 is better for passengers because everyone always complains whenever an aircraft is switched to a B777 for a particular route.
