[list][*]Fuel Costs
With two of the highest technology, fuel efficient large turbofan engines, the 777 simply burns less fuel than the 747-400s four slightly older turbofans.[*]Crew Costs
Pilots get paid less since it is a larger gauge plane. Not as many F/As are required (in fact, I believe the ratio of F/A to PAX is less on the 777 than the 747).[*]Theoretical Cargo Efficiency
Space-wise, the 777 actually has more cargo room than the 747. However, the 747 has a higher MGTOW (maximum gross takeoff weight), which means it can take off with heavier cargo. But... for its size and pax capacity, the 777 is the more efficient plane, even though the 747 has the potential to carrier heavier (and more generally more expensive) cargo.[*]Other factors
- Because the 777 weighs significantly less, landing fees are lower
- The 777 incorporates the latest methods of aircraft repair and components
- Downgauging aircraft capacity from a 747 that was breakeven pertty much guarantees profitability
- Better impression on the PAX (same to better comfort in F & C, better comfort with PTVs in Coach)
