What makes the 777 less costly to operate then the 747?

So I've been reading all these posts about equipment downgrades and how many flights (particularly transpacific) are moving from the 747 to the 777.

As I don't know much about airline management and cost structure, I'm wondering what it is about the 777 that makes it less costly to operate then the 747? I'm assuming loads aren't a problem, or are they?

So glad I found this site. Incredibly informative and fun to read!
