Don't worry too much about the food in Mexico. DaDaDan is correct Mexico is safe. I lived there for little more than a year and enjoyed the tacos and tortas* almost every day.

*A torta is a sandwich on a roll in Mexico. One can have almost anything on a torta. They are great.
