I believe the official rule is that you have to pay to upgrade fare class, but I've definately read fare rules that say you should waive the fee to upgrade cabins. In any case, do what DLFan2 suggests and call someone else. Even when not switching cabins, I personally and many others have been successful in arguing out of a change fee in this situation.
