A friend of mine lost his passport a couple of weeks ago, the night before he was due to fly out on his honeymoon. At 9am the next morning he went into the local passport office with his docs and explained the situation... they took pity on him and, after paying the expedite fee, which normally gives a 48 hour turnaround, they had it done in 20 minutes. He and his wife made their 12noon flight!

Australia might not have the same backlog as in the US, but guess you could still try the honeymoon line there too
