You must surrender your license.
But what you can do is: if you come to the US on vacation, beforehand you go to your local "whatever Amt that issues driver licenses" (sorry I forgot which), and tell them you temporarily need your American license back in order to drive in the US.
I know a bunch of Americans in Munich who did that.
