If you can do it, I would thoroughly recommend it. If you are only traveling with a carryon (my recommendation), you can catch the No. 19 or 20 public bus from the airport to Waikiki Beach for $2 (and this even includes one transfer to another bus route if required). Depending on the time of day, you will also be able to crash out in a fairly inexpensive hotel if you wish.

Great, thanks for the response! If I can swing it, I think I might give this a shot....since I most likely would not be able to get home on the same calendar day as I leave, getting a free layover in HNL sounds much better than sitting around LAX from 11 am until 10:30 pm!
I probably will do my best to carry on just to avoid any luggage issues.
