That was me. It was a mainline ORD-TPA bump in February. I did not accept the free ticket, wrote my letter, got my credits and a letter stating that I could request the credits and that they would remind agents.
For 2 mainline bumps in DEN and LAS in April, the agents did not blink an eye.
However, on a UX LAX-OAK bump in May, the agent would only give the free ticket even when I showed the letter. ("Well, that's for O'Hare and mainline, not Express.") I accepted the free ticket, for a variety of reasons (mostly that I've got a bunch of credit vouchers already and I've already requalified this year.)
Because of this incident, I am sending another letter which asks: what the policy is for all UA metal, what I should do if I have a recalcitrant agent, and if I can share the information they give me. (I've felt a little uncomfortable about sharing the last letter.)
Hopefully, I'll have something to share in about a month.
