The German authorities never kept my UK driving licence so I still have it. However the Swiss authorities kept my German one when I moved here, so I now have only a Swiss and UK licence.
I have never had a problem renting cars in the US with a Swiss driving licence. The rental companies never seem to care. I've also never been stopped by traffic cops, but have always believed that foreign licences are accepted (or at least tolerated) in the US.
