Having never been to HNL, I'm not sure if it'd be possible to make it to a nearby beach or some exciting adventure, so I'd greatly appreciate input on the topic of stopping in HNL or just going straight AKL-LAX.
I do this all the time, but with a paid ticket from NRT to LAX, with a 23 hour and 30 min (free) layover in HNL (it's just the way the schedules pan out). Not sure however if you can do this with a MP award.
If you can do it, I would thoroughly recommend it. If you are only traveling with a carryon (my recommendation), you can catch the No. 19 or 20 public bus from the airport to Waikiki Beach for $2 (and this even includes one transfer to another bus route if required). Depending on the time of day, you will also be able to crash out in a fairly inexpensive hotel if you wish.
Have a great trip...
