cancelled train service- many questions

Hi everybody,

longtime poster on flyertalk, recently started using Amtrak frequently between Bos-NYP. I have a question about an upcoming trip that I'd like opinions on.
Booked about a month ago an upcoming trip BOS-NYP on regional at 5:30pm this coming Friday. Today I get a call saying that Amtrak has cancelled the 5:30pm and that they can offer me a 4pm which will take 7hours to get to NYP. Apparently there's some track work going on and apparently Amtrak just found out, so they cancelled the late trains.
I can't make the 4pm train, there's nothing later, and I have non-refundable hotel reservations. What's Amtrak's obligation here? I'm really angry and can't just leave work early to catch this train. Its also absurd that it takes 7 hours even if I rushed to make it.
All supervisors and customer relations people that I've spoken to have basically said "too bad." Is this standard customer care for Amtrak? Even airline service seems glowing by these standards.... Any thoughts? What do I do?
