Most airlines (exceptions such as WN and B6) have agreements where they will place you on other airlines IF you meet the criteria, such as missing your flight (if it is the airline's fault). At the end of the month, the charges are reconcile. This is the last resort.
*Slight correct, DL and American Eagle does have a small relationship in LAX and SoCal airports.
