The more I look into it, the better that option is sounding. I did call UA again, and on the 3rd try, got an agent to tell me that JAX-ORD-SFO-AKL-ADL is available for the outbound, and ADL-AKL-LAX-IAD-JAX for the return.
Would passing through LAX on the return involve jumping through the hoops you describe above? Thanks so much for bringing that issue to my attention ^ That's precisely the types of things I'm looking for. If LAX would be a headache, I can see if I can route through SFO on the way back as well.
Glad you found flights. I'm another that will give ^ to NZ ... think you'll enjoy their service, and don't forget to visit NZ lounges if you're able.
On the return, if there's no SFO availability, then LAX Int-Dom is not a big deal, but you do have to have extra transit time to exit Int terminal, catch a bus from Int-Dom, then go through security again. You're survive.
