While the license may be expired, it is a license to drive. We're flying, and not as the pilots. The fact that one's driving privileges are expired does not mean the ID is no longer valid, does it?
With TSA's new ID requirements, a license can be expired for less than 12 months, and still be allowed. However, you wouldn't be able to buy a beer in the airport bar with an expired ID.
