While the trip from SGN to Phnom Penh is only, theoretically, a few hours. The roads in Cambodia tend to be poor and bumpy. Given the same mileage, I would opt for an award to PNH via HKG. I recently took the Dragon Air flight from HKG-PNH and it was fine. You can also get a visa on arrival in Cambodia (have a picture with you). Last time I went to Vietnam, you needed to apply for a visa in advance.
