The cabin you are confirmed in at the time you check your luggage is the deciding factor in your checked luggage allowance. Doesn't matter if it is a paid F or upgraded F or F using miles.
I also know from experience that your statement is true...I have personally witnessed my checked luggage allowance changing from 50 lbs to 70 upon receiving an op-up.
