Interesting. When did the 744 service start? I fly AKL-HKG-AKL fairly regularly (last time was about 6 weeks ago) and it's been the dreadful old 34D since I can't remember when. The only time I've had a 744 or 343 is when there's been an equipment change. The 34D's are very tired and need an interior revamp, but I suppose it's better than 'regional' J class.
