I usually call ahead and ask them to clean out the fridge so there are no refreshments whatsoever. That's because I tend to use the fridge and I don't want any question as to whether I opened any of their 1000% markup items.
Makes you wonder what's going on when this happens as often as it does. I simply got tired of having to fight that issue all of the time.

At my last stay at a hotel with a minibar (The Mayflower in DC), there was a sign on the minibar saying that it was NOT to be used as a personal refrigerator and if you needed one, they could provide you with one for "a nominal fee."
Some minibars have sensors in them to help with inventory so if things are moved around to make room for personal snacks, it will trigger a sensor and you may get charged.
I simply refuse the key and fill the ice bucket.
