There not at the bottom of the ratings, but they're not particularly high, either.
One last point: there used to be a very reliable camera store in NY called 47th Street Photo. It's long gone (though another business has picked up the name). To my mind, 42nd St. Photo chose its name for a reason, and it's hard to believe that it wasn't to trade on the good reputation of the now-demised 47th Street Photo.
Re: B&H
They are, without question, the platinum standard for ethics, reliability, customer service, and in-depth knowledge of what they sell. I've been buying from them for well over a decade, representing tens of thousands of dollars in purchases. I've bought from them on-line, over the phone and at their store and never had a single problem. Returns, on this rare occasions when something was not to my liking, were a breeze. Their staff are New Yorkers, which means they are direct and blunt, but I've never encountered any who were rude or unpleasant (I'm originally from New York -- perhaps that's why). They've always taken the time to answer my questions, and on a number of occasions they've recommended a less expensive, but equally effective substitute for my needs (and they've always been right). I'd also recommend a visit to their store -- it is a veritable Disneyland for cameras and electronics (including an E-ticket ride for your merchandise once you've paid for it -- you'll see what I mean when you go). I also like and trust Adorama and J&R. However, BH is at the top of my list and I recommend them without any reservations. If all businesses were run with their integrity and efficiency, America would be a much better place.
And, no, I have no connection with BH other than being a long-time, very satisfied customer.
Oh, one last point: If you buy something expensive there, consider having it shipped to your home state, rather than taking it with you. B&H's shipping prices are very reasonable, and you'll save on the very high NYC sales tax.
