As also posted on another thread, I don't think any of us would contend that an H fare for any status shouldn't be upgraded before an SWU on lower than H. The problem is that UA could easily have accomplished that by making SWU's on lower than H only upgradeable at the gate. Inasmuch as this is common anyway, it would have driven away much less 1k revenue and provided more of an incentive for everyone to buy up. If 1k's found their upgrades on cheaper fares aren't clearing, they can buy up. This policy would have been clearly in UA's financial interest and would have preserved some additional benefit of being a 1k.
