Question delay vs. cancellation

One question. How exactly does one determine whether a flight is delayed or cancelled ? From what I know, in case of cancellation a compensation is paid, in addition to rebooking and assistance etc. While in case of delay, only assistance is provided but no compensation, right ? So it makes indeed a difference...

But how do we define this in cases, for example, when the delay is over 24 hours ? In such cases, should passengers not receive compensation like for cancellations ? What is the policy and practice ?

I mean, can my flight be delayed over 24 hours, and I am simply told "sorry your flight was late, we pay yoru hotel, that's it, your flight was not cancelled" ? While if it had been cancelled and I flew five hours later, then I would get compensation for a "cancelled" flight, right ? Weird.
