Even when the gas light comes on, there's usually about 4-5 gallons of gas left in a car - they make their money by most folks not returning the car completely empty. Even if you're saving 15 cents a gallon, unless your returning it completely empty (literally - not just with the gas light on), you're still not getting a better value than you would if you just pumped the gas yourself.
