I'd just go to a staffed Amtrak station and ask the ticket agent, since they're more likely to encounter these sorts of things.
In the San Francisco Bay Area, the Commuter Check transit benefit subsidy checks can be redeemed for any Amtrak travel. A few years ago, I combined a few checks to purchase an Acela Express ticket in advance of my Boston trip.
