I had a "Captain Tony" who just before departure, grabbed the PA phone by the front door (not in the cockpit), turned to face cabin and gave out a little speech.

Basically, he said something about ensuring a safe landing, smooth flight, blah, blah, then he adds, "By the way, I heard a rumor back here - something about being bankrupt."

He then goes on, "Folks, there are some things I can control and some things I can't. I can control things like a smooth landing, a smooth flight. As for those things I can't control, well, don't worry about them."

He finishes with, "Don't worry folks, your miles are safe."

That last statement didn't give him much credibility (in my opinion), but it was a nice gesture nevertheless.
