Upgrading with miles costs more than just buying club?

Does this strike anyone as mad? No, not using miles to upgrade from ET to CE... but the fact that using miles cost more than booking a CE trip in the first place.

Suppose I pop down to Athens on the 767 flight:
20:55 - 02:35 Heathrow (London) Athens BA0634 Euro Traveller
18:55 - 21:00 Athens Heathrow (London) BA0633 Euro Traveller
£235.30

Book & upgrade with miles, from ET to CE both ways:
20000BA Miles plus £ 583.30

But then suppose I book and pay into CE, it's £493.30

And yet miles all the way costs 40000BA Miles plus £99.30

So why oh why of why would I choose to use Miles to upgrade an economy booking, when I can buy CE for less, and get the TPs? In fact... suppose I just buy the cheapy ET ticket, and then when I've got the booking and try to upgrade using miles... is this free?

All ticket bucket can be upgraded can't they?

And before anyone asks just why I want to use miles to upgrade around Europe... I've got pots of miles sitting around, the credit crunch means I'm being more stingy than last year... and TFMsLorkers refuses to go near that EuroChav thing for anything longer than 45 minutes. Must say I agree...
