Wine List

Champagne

In celebration of the dynamic region that is Champagne, Qantas is proud to feature a range of Champagne styles in our program from some of the region’s finest and most respected Champagne houses including Charles Heidsieck, Dom Pérignon and Krug. From the fresher, more delicate Chardonnay dominant or Chardonnay-exclusive “Blanc des Blancs” styles, through to the weightier, more savoury Pinot Noir-dominant cuvees, our program showcases the diversity and quality for which this region is deservedly famed.

White Wine

Ferngrove “Cossack” Riesling 2007, Frankland River, West Australia
Located in Western Australia’s Great Southern, Frankland River is one of the coolest wine producing regions in Western Australia. The overall cool climate and long warm growing season ensure the grapes develop a delicate intensity and complexity on the vine. This medium bodied white wine is pale green with varietal characters of lime and tangerine complemented by distinctive mineral and floral hints. On the palate, its intense fresh citrus fruits with a mineral edge are followed by a crisp, satisfying, finish.

Clonakilla Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2006, Canberra District, New South Wales
Clonakilla is a small, family winery dedicated to making distinctive, handcrafted wines. Tim Kirk is the winemaker and scientist Dr John Kirk, his father, was the founder. The wines are made in limited quantities and can be a little hard to find. They are definitely worth the search. This Semillon Sauvignon Blanc is a fresh, dry white, perfect for sipping in the warmer months.

Freycinet Chardonnay 2006, Freycinet Peninsula, Tasmania
Freycinet Vineyard overlooks the spectacular Freycinet National Park area that includes the world renowned Freycinet Peninsula. The 2006 Chardonnay is a complex, full-flavoured creamy smooth style from one of the premier wineries of Tasmania. Rated 5 stars by James Halliday. Winemakers Claudio Radenti and Lindy Bull utilise traditional white burgundy techniques. Very ripe grapes provide the foundations to which the techniques of barrel fermentation in tight grain French oak casks, lees stirring and malo-lactic fermentation are utilised to provide the extra complexity, texture and layer of flavours.

Red Wine

Pondalowie Mt Tempranillo 2005, Bendigo, Victoria

Pondalowie is based in the Bendigo region and run by the team of Dominic and Krystina Morris, who have both worked in a number of wineries in Australia and Portugal. They planted their own small vineyard at Bridgewater in the mid-90s. “Spain’s plumy tempranillo grape is a terrific new addition to Australia’s run of red wines, delivering some wonderful flavours and fruit. This elegant, scented, rose and blackcurrant pastille-licked red, with plenty of bright vibrant fruit is a case in point.” Jane MacQuitty. The Times 26/6/07 (London).

Torbreck “The Steading” Grenache Mourvèdre Shiraz 2005, Barossa Valley, South Australia

“On a highland farm the collection of barns, stables and outbuildings is known as a steading. The varieties Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz all stand in their own right. However, in blending, their strengths create a complex wine of solid earthy structure.” David Powell, finalist in the 2004 Qantas Winemaker of the year awards. A truly impressive wine in the Chateauneuf-de-Pape mould made from ancient low-yielding Barossa Valley vines.

Tahbilk Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 1999, Nagambie Lakes, Victoria
Tahbilk is one of Australia’s oldest wineries, established in central Victoria’s Nagambie Lakes region in 1860. The historic winery is known for creating “old world” style wines to age for many decades, though both capable and worthy of earlier consumption. This is an excellent but all too rare example of cool-climate Australian Cabernet Sauvignon. Exceptionally fragrant with violets and ripe blackcurrant, smooth supple and “cedary” with complex hints of undergrowth.

Dessert Wine

De Bortoli Noble One Botrytis Semillon 2004, Riverina, New South Wales
De Bortoli’s 1982 Noble One remains recognised as the greatest sweet white made outside Europe and each vintage this bran sets the benchmark for which producers of all Australian dessert whites strive to reach. The wine itself is intensely sweet and luscious, its richness only matched by searing acidity of almost breathtaking intensity.

Fortified Wine

Morris of Rutherglen Old Premium Liqueur Muscat and Tokay, Rutherglen, Victoria
Qantas is proud to offer a selection of premium Australian fortified wines including these two outstanding examples. These unique wine style are made from decades-old grape material and are considered to be amongst the World’s finest fortified wine styles. Traditionally served with cheese, petits fours and coffee, or as a digestif, these wines may also be a suitable partner for richer desserts.
