"Hey buddy, will you take this on the plane for me"?

I give the GA my boarding pass for my UA flight LAS-LAX and I'm walking down a long corridor before I actually get to the jet bridge (I think it's gate D35) when I see a passenger and a GA talking at the other end of the corridor. I'm not paying them any attention until I get next to them when the passenger says to me "Hey buddy, will you take this on the plane for me?" and showed me a shopping bag that he wanted me to take aboard. I looked at the GA and asked "Is that allowed?" to which she said "absolutely not." The passenger threw up his hands and said to the GA "Oh, come on" and I walked onto the plane. I only had one piece of carry on and I guess he had too many pieces and the GA wanted him to gate check something (I didn't notice how many pieces he was trying to carry on). I saw him get on the plane (he was one of the last to board), but I couldn't tell what he brought on board. Maybe UA is starting to enforce the carry on rule.

This is the first time I can remember that someone that I didn't know asked me to carry something on a plane for them. I can't remember someone asking me to watch something for them in the gate area let alone take something on a plane. I'm curious, has anyone else been asked this before?
