I can't see where there's be a problem with buying two seats. The problem, as you've noted is keeping them. In the case of overbooking, you couldn't possibly justify keeping an empty seat next to you, if that meant someone else missed the flight, could you?
If you lost one of your two paid seats, you would absolutely be entitled to denied boarding compensation. In my opinion you should be entitled to demand either to keep two seats or to receive DBC for both.
