Actually as long as the SWU said you could upgrade "S" fares, you were allowed. I know I was and have been flying UA in out of Japan for many years. I suppose I am just trying to clarify for readers that if you do fly on an "S" fare out of NRT, and the fare rules do not specifically disallow upgrades with SWUs, you will be fine. If one were to generalize about agents here in Tokyo, it would be a safe generalization to state that they will follow the rules to the letter a large amount of the time.

To esure your upgrade, one of the best things to do is to go to a ticketing specialist within the system. These usually work at the CTOs. The route of getting formal permission from a CTO here and having that permission enetered into your record in the United Fields is a safe bet and one I found to give me peace of mind in the days when the new "NO S" fare upgrade certificates came out.
