While not wanting to lay all the blame on OP the long story short part about how it escalated from snippy comments to assault does make me wonder whether there wasn't some culpability on both sides as it generally takes two to tango and argue.
Well, you never know. Sometimes you try to help other passenger(s) and it gets you in trouble as well, like I learnt some time ago. From then on, my policy is "do not get involved". Actually, I prefer not to be bothered. I know what I am doing, 99.9% of time have just 1 (one) carry-on, and as Elite have my choice of seat. I also do not appreciate to be asked to change a seat, often by Tango fare pax who tried to save money.
Didn't somebody on FT say: "Other people lack of planning is not my emergency."
