Funny (and true) story: on my first ever trip to Germany, I got quite lost on the way to Schloss Neuschwanstein and accidentally ended up across the Austrian border where, to my surprise, a police roadblock was diverting traffic from the main highway through a little side area where a cop would talk to each motorist.

Cop: "You aren't in Germany anymore! But we're looking for criminals, and I don't think you have any criminals with you [I was alone in a rented Mini Cooper, so it was a pretty easy search] so you can go."
