It no longer makes any sense to do pay-as-you go in the US. T-mobile offers a product called, "Flexpay" that allows you to have the benefit of an annual subscription on a month to month basis. So, you would go to a TMO store, sign-up (no credit check required) and you are good to go. In terms of a longer-term US number, you might want to check out Grand Central...it should do that for you.
