I know that when I first discovered this “enhancement” to the previously wonderful pay at the pump facility I used to enjoy in the past, I had thought it may just be for data gathering. So I entered the Zip code of a relation’s home address, only to have my card rejected.
So now I need to “deposit” dollars with the attendant in the shop, before filling up

My own observation is that credit cards can only be used the old-fashioned way (that is reading the magnetic strip), as soon as you leave your home country. The chip on my credit card has never been readable anywhere else.
As far as entering zip codes in the USA at petrol stations, I have occasionally managed to get away with typing in 01295, which is a five figure extension of my four figure zip code, but I suspect that the system will deliver petrol (or gas) irrespective of what you type in whenever the system is working offline and can't verify the card.
