I'm in the same position as you and have recently always stayed in Bangkok first before traveling domestic. But I can confirm that this has changed and they do announce the changes onboard prior to landing - all transfer passengers to domestic flights must pass through immigration at BKK. I've also seen the immigration counter setup for International-to-Domestic transit passengers, even though I've never actually used it.
